Why You Should Pay Attention to Your Skin Microbiome?

Why You Should Pay Attention to Your Skin Microbiome?

The largest organ is your skin. And trillions of microbes, including bacteria, fungus, and viruses, are thriving there. The skin microbiome is a term used to describe these invisible life organisms.

What’s the Function of Skin’s Microbiome?

It is a component of the outer physical layer that shields you from the environment. It collaborates with other skin tissues to:

  • Ward against infection.

Certain microbes function as organic antibiotics. They also assist in maintaining your skin’s acidity, which many bacteria dislikes.

  • Aid the immune system in its work.

Your skin’s microbes serve as a sort of warning flare, alerting your immune system to potentially dangerous germs or viruses.

  • Wound healing and inflammation control.

Your immune system can be activated or deactivated by signals from your skin microbiota. It promotes healing and reduces harmful inflammation.

Microbiome and Skin Problems

Your microbiome may alter in unfavourable ways. We refer to this imbalance as dysbiosis. The reason why this occurs is unclear. But it’s connected to some medical issues, like:

  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Non-healing wounds

How to protect your skin’s microbiome?

You have little control over many of the factors that influence the composition of your skin’s microbiome. Yet, there are a few things you can do to safeguard the delicate flora communities on your skin. Follow these five recommendations to maintain the happy, healthy, and thriving microbiome of your skin:

  • Cleanse properly, then dry.

Do not overwash or use abrasive cleaners. And be careful not to scrub too much. Too much rubbing can remove the beneficial bacteria from your skin while also causing microscopic tears in the skin. These microscopic tears may serve as a breeding habitat for harmful microorganisms. When it’s time to dry off, pat your skin lightly instead of wiping yourself with the towel forcefully.

  • Eat healthily and drink plenty of water.

Like most elements of your health, your food is extremely important for maintaining healthy skin. A diet high in fibre, protein, and healthy fats benefits your gut flora, which may then benefit your skin microbiome. Furthermore, make sure you consume 64 ounces or more of water each day. Your microbiota may be negatively impacted by persistent dehydration. Finally, make an effort to routinely work up a sweat to support the microbiota of your skin.

  • Use the right skincare product
